Fundraising the Old-Fashioned Way

A Collection of ‘Ah-ha Moments’ During My Journey Back onto the Fundraising Front Lines

I recently had the opportunity to take part in a grassroots fundraising effort. It’s been a while since I was the one actually raising the funds – usually, I’m the one behind the scenes helping others do so.

But this time, I was out in front. It was a terrific experience, not only because we were wildly successful but also because I was reminded of all the things I love about generosity, raising money for good causes, and pulling teams together.

I learned so much during this time back on the front lines and feel compelled to share a few of my ‘ah-ha’ moments. I offer them in the hopes that they help you reignite your fundraising fire as you prepare for the holidays and gear up for another big year of giving in 2024.

First, passion for the mission matters most.

Let’s be honest: not all of us care passionately about every mission we meet. But boy, is there magic when a personal passion intersects with a worthy cause. In this grassroots effort, the cause was so important to me that it eroded any concerns I had about my busy schedule, how much time it would take, what people would think of me for asking for donations, or whether I would succeed.

As you can probably tell, I was determined to succeed. With this fire inside me, I was reminded of a key ingredient to fundraising success: volunteers so passionate about the mission that they’re willing to overcome personal obstacles to meet the goal.

Second, the right materials make it easier to ask.

I spend a lot of time with my capital campaign clients, helping them create masterful case statements to tell the story of their campaign objectives. As I spent time fundraising these past several months, I was reminded again how the right materials can make a huge difference.

Often, the materials can articulate the project and its purpose better than the person speaking. Well-designed and thorough materials also help legitimize the effort. Not to mention that leaving materials with a potential donor serves as a handy reminder that they need to decide on a gift amount soon.

I always advise my clients to make giving easy for donors; this experience reminded me why. Our materials clearly outlined multiple giving amounts and pledge payment options, making it super easy for anyone to participate at whatever level was most comfortable for them.

Third, teamwork makes the dream work.

Our fundraiser was orchestrated by a small group of volunteers as eager to reach our goal as I was. We all played our part, and the network of potential donors expanded after every conversation.

And we had a blast! As we pushed closer to our goal, texts and emails circulated like crazy, each containing the name of a new potential donor. Each message brought us closer together.

Pulling the right team together makes all the difference in the world. Our volunteers were not only passionate about the mission; they were dedicated to supporting one another in its success. Because of our teamwork, we raised more for our cause and had a ton of fun along the way.

Finally, I titled this article “Fundraising the Old-Fashioned Way” because our success didn’t require fancy bells, whistles, or cutting-edge technology.

We made phone calls, distributed handouts, and sent emails, texts, and Facebook messages. We leaned into the relationships we had with one another and our devotion to the mission.

And guess what? Donors rose to the occasion.

I wholeheartedly believe that by blending our personal passion for the mission and our deep relationships, we inspired our community of donors - and ourselves - to stand up and successfully support a worthy cause.

This December, I wish you lots of holiday magic. And, as we cast our gaze upon the start of a new year, I also wish you that special kind of fundraising magic where the cause is worthy, the team is energized and committed, and the doors to donor dollars open easily.

Happy fundraising! Happy Holidays!

My best,

Dani
