I began my career as the Assistant Director of the Annual Fund as Susquehanna University – 20 years ago! Since that day, I’ve worked in and with fundraising programs of all sizes and configurations, running development programs, leading capital campaigns and working with board and staff alike to create donor-centered approaches to raising money. I learned a few things along the way:
You need a solid, strategic fundraising plan.
But more importantly, you need to work that plan and evaluate and measure your success along the way.
Good donor data is the wind beneath your wings, telling you who to talk to, when to approach them and how to craft your message.
The world is changing and technology is becoming increasingly important to your fundraising efforts. The most important tool in your toolbox, however, remains inspiring trust and confidence in your donors through the development of strong relationships.
Fundraisers need support, encouragement and affirmation. Fundraising can be rewarding work. But, when the goal increases year after year, it can also, at times, feel like you’re pushing a boulder up a hill. Having someone who empathizes with what you’re going through can make all the difference in the world.
